The Story of Ortnerhof
Welcome to our traditional farmhouse
For more than 300 years, our family has lived here in this beautiful place – with and from nature. For generations, we have been farmers and forestry workers, deeply connected to our surroundings.
From Storm to Strength
In 2018, our hearts were broken: Storm “Vaia” swept through the surrounding forests. Altogether, 5,900 hectares of forest were affected – the equivalent of around 8,300 football fields. Around 500,000 cubic meters of timber were brought down, a volume comparable to approximately 12,000 buses. Our forest was also heavily damaged by this storm.
For our family, one thing was immediately clear:
The wood that generations before us had cared for and nurtured should remain here on our farm. The first step was renovating the barn, whose northern side had already become “preschthaft” (= rotten and fragile). The southern side, however, was still in good condition, and we decided to use this building to combine our old traditions with modern timber construction.
This is how the new Ortnerhof was created: a wooden house built from our own timber, with walls finished using clay plaster from our own excavation soil and sustainable energy sources such as wood and hydropower. We also wanted to preserve and reuse the 300-year-old boards from the old barn roof. Today, the dining room ceiling is made from exactly this wood – inspired by the thought:
“Our ancestors, and we ourselves, worked and gathered hay under this roof for centuries … and future generations will continue to work beneath it.”
A house that tells our story – and is now part of your holiday experience.
